Clearing Creative Cobwebs
It’s fall, friends...
The season of Samhain, Halloween and dia de los muertos. Some might say, it’s spooky this time of year.
So let’s talk about cobwebs... Creative cobwebs!
The worst kind.
I wish creative cobwebs were as easy to clean as the cobwebs that collect in the corners of our rooms. Alas, it’s gonna take a bit more effort.
So, let’s define it:
A creative cobweb is a repellent, dusty vortex of stuck energy left as a remnant in the corners of your psyche when you leave your creative projects unfinished.
You know the ones.
The manuscript you started and have not yet finished.
The pile of clothes you cleared from your closet this summer but have yet to actually take anywhere to donate.
The list of ideas on your laptop that make you depressed every time you look at it.
The pile of bills and paperwork sitting on your desk that scares you away every time you consider sitting down to write or paint or make art.
You get the idea.
In my 10-month mastermind, Metamorphosis, where our mission is to generate prosperity though creativity, we take on monthly challenges that move our work forward. For their first monthly challenge, I assigned them the homework of identifying and clearing at least one creative cobweb currently taking up physical, emotional and energetic space in their psyche.
Why did I choose to begin here?
Because I think we underestimate the power of creative cobwebs to distract, dissuade and totally sabotage our creative power. This not only affects our mood, vision and daily productivity, but on a more subtle level, it begins to subconsciously weigh us down.
Though we might not be able to put our finger on it, our uncompleted projects and commitments stop us from taking new action— and even worse, they stop us from believing in ourselves, in believing that we are capable of completing projects and crossing the finish line like a champ.
Just like how a physical cobweb traps and collects dust, a creative cobweb traps your creative energy and holds it hostage until you exert the effort to clean that $h!# up.
So, in the spirit of encouraging you, dear one, I want to invite you into some creative cobweb clearing.
Here’s your mission, should you choose to accept it:
1. Identify at least 1 unfinished project or "creative cobweb"
Choose something that is completely attainable to complete before the end of the year.
2. Write out all the steps to complete it.
This is crucial, as you’ve got to identify all the steps. Write out each unknown you need to solve, including if you need help, recommendations, suggestions or support
3. Choose a deadline, and put it on your calendar.
Remember to also schedule specific times when you’ll actually do the work. As Marie Forleo says, “if it’s not on my calendar, it’s not real.”
4. Tell someone in your life, so they can help hold you accountable!
Trying to hold our commitments in silence and isolation rarely bares fruit. Ask a friend, mentor or ally for a check-in to make sure you're still on track with your goal.
Let’s be clear my love. This project might not be easy. You might feel all kinds of resistance rise up to haunt you, or a chorus of internal critics telling you how much of a loser you are that you havn’t already finished this project, and that it’s not even worth the bother.
F those voices!
You’ve got this.
In order to be a masterful creator, you’ve gotta be a masterful FINISHER.
It starts here, with getting clear on where we’re avoiding the finish line, then creating a strong, defined process for crossing that finish line.
If you need a buddy, reach out and let me know what you project is, what the steps are, and when your deadline is.
Better yet, take a photo that represents your cobweb and make a post on IG. Tag me, @BrittaGreenViolet.
Get visible in your cobweb clearing!
This is what accountability looks like.
