The Foolproof Approach to Defining Your MISSION

Let’s talk about MISSION.

To be precise, let's talk about your mission.

When's the last time you defined it?

Have you been able to concisely put it into words?

If so, do you feel satisfied by those words, or does it fall short of what you deeply know your purpose to be in your heart's center?

Mission is a big bag to unpack.

I feel we can take 2 approaches to defining mission.

The first approach: know your why.
Define it right out of the gate. As we've heard (a bit repetitively if I might be so bold to say so) from many experts, your "why" is what fuels everything you do. Also known as your soul's purpose or mission, this is the beating heart that gives a rhythm to the life of your work... that's why it's so important to identify. Because when things get hard, you can always lean back into the heart of what matters most, and that will get you out of bed, pull you from a lethargic state, rouse you from uncertainty, and startle you from complacency.

The second approach: trust that you'll find your why... or rather, your why will find you.
In truth, locating your 'why' is harder than it sounds. There are so many causes you care about. How to know which one is actually the most important lifeline? Beyond our big empathetic hearts that want to help everyone, and want to learn everything, and want to be of service everywhere, we are also evolutionary beings. Our very DNA is shifting, our genetics are modifying, our cells are renewing and our core structure of being is undergoing metamorphosis our entire lives. So your 'why' 5 years ago might not be your 'why' anymore.

Personally, I'm an advocate for plan B. If you've known your why from the beginning, thats great. Most people don't have that experience. Myself included.

When I started my path as a teacher and mentor, my why was rooted in my conundrum around holistic health. I was diagnosed with a benign pituitary tumor when I was 19, and spent more than a decade torturing myself with victim mentality and unending frustration at the prospect of helplessly taking prescriptions for the rest of my life. From that place, my why was to find a better way— a holistic way— to tend, heal, and nourish my body. In fact, to befriend my body and embrace it as a temple, rather than an enemy making my life miserable.

Then, music saved my life, and brought me to my beloved. My why began to morph toward harmony, and embracing song and music as the ultimate spiritual path. In a cosmic nod of synchronicity, just as I wrote those words, a flock of Canadian geese flew overhead, singing with vigor!

Then, I slowly began to realize neither wellness nor harmony fully encapsulated the core of what I'm here to do. Either one on its own felt limiting. As I continue to walk my path, I've started to pull together the threads into a single tapestry, where leadership through sacred service is at the epicenter.

My mission has recently revealed itself in a new way.

Read: IT revealed itself. It found me! Not the other way around.

If we are patient, devoted, and continue to aim our heart's arrow toward what matters most, our mission will find us. And in alignment with all my recent work around dismantling unconscious patterns of ambition, this approach feels SO much better.

There's nothing I need to do except keep asking questions. Stoke the fires of my own curiosity and passions. Take the next step.

My mission, in each evolutionary phase, will find me. And so will yours.

So, what's your mission, beloved? Or as my soul ally, friend & mentor Katerina Satori says,

"What's the mission that has found you?"

If it's been a while since you clarified your mission, perhaps it’s time for a new version…
